![]() ![]() ![]() Paul Newman started acting in school productions at the age of seven. To help prepare for the part, he worked on a ranch for a brief time before filming. I can’t picture any other actor in the role. He is so mesmerizing at making this man who lives only for himself a complete and whole person. “Hud” is perhaps the most unsympathetic role of his career, yet because of his likable quality, it’s hard to hate him. When I was in an archeological museum in Italy, I was half joking when I commented that the heads of many of the idealized Roman statues looked just like Paul Newman - and they did! He excelled possibly better than any other actor at playing likable, morally ambiguous characters. He was also known for his beautiful looks and piercing blue eyes. He had a charming cockiness about him, and early in his career became best known for playing rebellious, complex and brooding characters, often with a subtle humor about them. Paul is such a skilled actor that if you watch him closely, you will rarely if ever find a false moment. He was listed among the top ten box office stars fourteen times between 19 (twice being #1). An international legend, icon and charismatic movie star for over fifty years, he gave countless extraordinary performances in many classic films. I’m thrilled to introduce the work of one of my all-time favorite actors, Paul Newman, who stars in the title role as “Hud Bannon”. Martin Ritt died in 1990 at the age of 76. Many consider “Hud” his crowning achievement. He would direct twenty five features, often about social issues, including several classics such as "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold", "Norma Rae", "Sounder", "The Great White Hope", "Pete 'n' Tillie”, “Murphy's Romance”, and "The Front". Ritt worked with Paul Newman twice before “Hud” - in ”The Long, Hot Summer”, and "Paris Blues” (which also starred Poitier ). After the Red Scare, he directed his first feature film “Edge of the City” in 1957 with Sidney Poitier (who you saw in “In the Heat of the Night” ). Come the McCarthy Era he was blacklisted from television and became an acting teacher at the Actors Studio. Ritt acted in and directed plays, and then began directing television in 1950. Martin Ritt began as an actor and joined the Group Theater in New York where he worked with Elia Kazan (who I mention in “A Face in the Crowd” post). His direction earned him his one and only “Best Director” Oscar nomination. With a somewhat streamlined look and feel, director Martin Ritt holds nothing back in immersing the viewer into life in a small Texas town and seducing us to crave more about these characters.

And if that goes, researchers fear nothing may stop the rest from doing the same. Even though total collapse of the glacier could take hundreds or thousands of years, the edge is falling apart much sooner. What worries scientists is that the leading edge of the huge glacier is breaking apart in many places. Two cracks on the Brunt Ice Shelf are creeping closer to each other. These edges with warm water underneath border the ocean and provide “back support” that holds the rest of the glacier in place, preventing it from falling into the sea, Holland said. This giant chunk of ice could break off Antarctica any day. The key to the future of Thwaites is the ice shelf and its tongue. A enormous iceberg bigger than Los Angeles or Greater London has separated from the Amery Ice Shelf in Antarctica, the largest to do so in more than half a century. And that’s ironic – and troublesome for researchers – because overall Antarctic sea ice is unusually low for this time of year, Larter said. Much of the problem is that loads of sea ice have gravitated around the huge iceberg. It measures about 43 miles by 28 miles, almost the size of Rhode Island, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. This iceberg used to be the tongue or leading edge of Thwaites until it broke off about 20 years ago, Larter said. Thwaites is spawning more icebergs as it falls apart, Holland said. “Nobody can get to Thwaites this year,” Holland told the Associated Press on Monday. The smaller Dotson ice shelf is about 87 miles (140km) west of the Thwaites ice shelf. He is hoping that along that blinding white ice and its rugged frozen cliffs he can learn about the unseen warm ocean water nibbling away at both Dotson and Thwaites from below. A vast iceberg that broke off from Antarctic earlier this month could drift through the ocean for years before it breaks up and melts away, a scientist from the ESA said Friday. The Brunt Ice Shelf is the location of British Antarctic Survey’s (BAS) Halley. The melting of Antarcticas ice sheet is currently responsible for 20-25 of global sea level rise. There are two primary causes of global mean sea level rise added water from melting ice sheets and glaciers, and the expansion of sea water as it warms. Improvising, Holland decamped at the nearby Dotson ice shelf to do his research where no human had been before. The table iceberg, named D-28 by scientists, broke off the shelf in east Antarctica on September 26. A huge iceberg (1270 km²) the size of the county of Bedfordshire has broken off the 150-m thick Brunt Ice Shelf, almost a decade after scientists at British Antarctic Survey (BAS) first detected growth of vast cracks in the ice. Antarcticas Effect on Sea Level Rise in Coming Centuries. David Holland, an environmental scientist at New York University, who planned to drill deep through the Thwaites ice shelf to measure the water’s warmth below it, is achingly close but not quite there. He then watched his friends all fall in line with the Mormon faith, and once he reached college he started to find some new friends. Jack formed the band Ritt Momney in 2017 with some friends, and they released a song called "Young Adult," which gained some traction on Spotify. "Why would I limit myself to piano and guitar when I could plug into a computer and have the sound of any instrument I wanted at my fingertips?" "I felt like production was really fun for me," he says. He graduated to GarageBand and then on over to Logic. He taught himself the piano and guitar, recording acoustic covers on his phone then posting them on SoundCloud. His older brother was a musician, and Jack wanted to try it. He kept searching for more music, diversifying his palate, listening to other artists like Earl Sweatshirt and STRFKR. "It was then that I realized music doesn't have to sound like everything else for it to be good," he admits. That was until he reached high school and stumbled upon James Blake's eponymous debut album, which arguably changed Jack's life.
